When it comes to all-weather sport touring tyres, Metzeler’s Roadtec 01 has developed a reputation as one of the very best on the market right now.
The unique race-wet style tread pattern clears water extremely efficiently from around the contact patch, even at lean, to deliver safe, dependable grip even in poor weather conditions.
In the September issue of Practical Sportsbike, Damian Smith reviewed a set after more than 3,000 miles on a Yamaha Thundercat.
Here are his thoughts:
“We fitted these Metzelers before I’d even ridden the old ‘cat, so I’ve got nothing to compare them to. But the grip, always the most important thing, is trong in the dry, and very impressive in wet or damp conditions too (not that we’ve had much of that this summer.)
They also seem to be wearing well too. The centre of the rear is flattening off a little, but nowhere near being ready for replacement. I reckon I’ll maybe get 5000 miles from the rear and 10,000 from the front, which is mightily impressive.
The front is super-stable on the brakes and it doesn’t white-line at all, even when you hit really rough overbanding or broken tarmac.
As a sports/touring tyre it’s hard to beat and I bet it would be OK at a trackday too, so long as you weren’t in the fast group.
If the ‘cat needs new boots I’d happily go with these again.”
