Gloucestershire’s Minchinhampton circuit played host to the opening round of the AMCA Motocross Championships last weekend, and gave the newly formed JSR Thunder Road Honda squad a first chance to pit themselves against a field of quality riders.
The four rider squad, all running on Bridgestone Battlecross shod Honda machines, had mixed fortunes at the first meeting of the season with the best of the results going to Simon Lane in the Vets class.
Simon grabbed three hole shots in a row to take a 3rd, 2nd and finally 1st place on the increasingly rough track which was baking under the constant glare of the spring sunshine. With a consistent lead of 15 to 20 seconds in the final race, he really showed the kind of dominant performance he is capable of, and will be one to watch this year. Simon’s excellent results saw him come away with the overall win at the event to take an early lead in the class.
Jamie Smith was without a doubt the bravest rider of the meeting as he battled through the pain, having had a cast and pin removed from his wrist just days before the opening races. Jamie has been recovering from an accident which left him with broken ribs and a punctured lung less than one month ago.
A punctured radiator in the opening race meant that Luke Newman had to run his practice bike for the rest of the day, but he still put in some solid displays to fight his way through the pack and into the points.
The youngest rider of the team, Tyron Cleaver was unfortunate to get caught up in someone else’s incident in his opening moto, leading to red flags and Tyron being knocked unconscious. Already out of hospital, Tyron is fully prepared for the second round at Nympsfield this coming Easter weekend.
