World Superbike Technology For The Roads

Pirelli Diablo Rosso 3

Last October, Pirelli announced the launch of it’s 3rd generation Diablo Rosso hypersport tyre, which the manufacturer says uses technologies directly derived from it’s World Superbikes rubber.

Much of the development of the new Diablo Rosso III is based around Pirelli’s involvement with the Supersport and Superstock support classes, where the riders use treaded tyres. The main focus of the development process was to ensure that the new tyre gave riders a high level of performance combined with a safe feeling in both wet and dry conditions. The Italian manufacturer also claim an increase in durability, giving the rider more miles for their money.

Pirelli Diablo Rosso 3The dual-compound rear tyre used a 40-20-40 configuration, with softer compounds at the edge of the tyre for better grip in the corners, and a more durable centre band which gives greater stability at speed. The front tyre in single compound, and offers excellent feedback and great stability.

The profile of the tyre has been based on that of the Diablo Supercorsa used in the World Supersport and Superstock classes, and adapted for use on the road. The front tyre’s profile is higher in the middle and wider at the sides than that of the previous-generation Diablo Rosso II; this design provides a larger contact area, particularly at high angles of lean. At the same time the height of the sidewall has been increased by about 3 millimetres to favour greater sidewall flexibility in acceleration out of bends, with a great benefit in terms of traction. A similar scheme and geometry has been adopted for the rear tyre.

A new casing, similar in structure to that of the Supercorsa, makes the tyre more rigid that it’s predecessor. This ensures the tyre is able to sustain it’s profile under load, optimising the size of the contact patch for improved grip. In order to achieve this Pirelli have  used high-performance Rayon in the carcass, and adjusted the density of the belt to balance rigidity and bump absorption for a stable but comfy rider.
