There was a slight decline in the sales of new bikes in July recent figures reveal.
Data released by the MCIA shows that the market dipped by 2.6% overall when compared with July last year, although sales of larger capacity motorcycles and scooters actually dropped by just 0.9% or just 94 units. The big drop came in the moped sector which fell by 21.8%, and remains 7.6% down year to date.
Sales of Trail & Enduro bikes actually rose by 14.9% when compared with last year, with Naked machines up 7.1% and larger capacity Scooters up 3.8%. Custom bike sales dropped -4.7%, and registrations of new Adventure Sport motorcycles also dropped -7.4% for the month. In percentage terms the biggest drops came from the Supersport (-14.7%), Touring (-18.9%) and Sport Touring (-21.4%) sectors – although in real terms these falls equated to a drop in sales of 200 units, 39 units and 89 units respectively.
In line with the sharp drop in new moped sales, the registration of new 0 – 50cc capacity machines fell -21.4%. Sales of learner legal 51 – 125cc machines remained relatively stable with a tiny drop of -0.3%, but there were still 4,642 of these new bikes registered for the month. A2 licence legal 126 – 650cc registrations were actually up 5.5%, although sales of 651 – 1000cc machines did drop by -2.5%. The sales of machines with an engine capacity above 1000cc dipped -6.1% for the month.
For the first time since we started covering these figures in January 2014, Yamaha have claimed the number one spot from Honda selling 1,838 new machines in July as their latest raft of models continue to be a big hit with UK consumers. Honda took 2nd place with 1,686 new bikes sold and Lexmoto jumped ahead of Triumph with 1,086 units sold. The British manufacturer sold 759 new bikes followed by Kawasaki (619), BMW (596) and Piaggio (476).
The biggest selling bike of the month was also a Yamaha, with the new MT-10 supernaked proving hugely popular as 255 were purchased last month.

Overall the market remains up 5.8% to the end of July, and with the sun finally coming back out, more people’s attention will turn to getting back out on 2-wheels!
