In a recent test of the latest crop of 2015 superbikes, from the likes of BMW, Aprilia and Yamaha – US based Motorcyclist magazine turned to the Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SC as their control tyre.
The SC, which is the spec tyre for the likes of the World Supersport series, is constantly being updated by the Italian manufacturer and the latest version includes revised profiles, updated compounds and a new tread design for a larger contact patch at full lean.
The SC looks identical to the road-oriented Supercorsa SP, but fronts and rears are available in a number of compounds, ideal for fast track riding.
The Motorcyclist team selected the SC2 compound front and rear for all bikes on the abrasive surface of Burtonwillow, with temperatures at the Southern Californian circuit reaching scorching-hot levels. They said:
“The tyres performed flawlessly, delivering sharp handling, great straight-line and braking stability, and absolutely incredible edge grip. Given that all our test bikes have TC and all but one have ABS, we were compelled to explore the limits of traction and we came away unanimously amazed by just how distant the Pirelli’s limits are.
In light of the raw horsepower of our test machines we were also impressed with the tyres durability. When we swapped rubber midday most of the rears still had ample tread remaining.”
After plenty of track time, and a lot of debate, the bikes were ranked as follows:
- 1st – Yamaha YZF-R1M
- 2nd – Aprilia RSV4 RF
- 3rd – BMW S1000RR
- 4th – Ducati 1299 Panigale S
- 5th – Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R
