In the most recent issue of RiDE magazine they decided to give the latest Storm 3D X-M sport touring rubber from Avon a thorough road test with a 2,500 mile trip down to the Route Napoleon in southern France, and it seems the riders were suitably impressed!
The tyre itself has been designed to suit high powered sports touring bikes, and the people from RiDE certainly picked a suitable pair of bikes to test Avon’s claims of stability, good handling, excellent dry grip, wet weather performance and extended mileage in the shape of the Kawasaki ZZR1400 Performance Sport and the Honda VFR1200F.
More than half of the riding on their 2,500 mile journey involved some hard motorway miles partly in the name of testing to see if the big, powerful bikes would tear the crown off the profile of the rear tyre. Upon their return both riders commented on how the rear profiles were still round, complementing the “toughness” of the tyre
The conditions on the trip ensured that both riders and tyres were challenged as they encountered blinding fog, hailstone and rain as well as finally being treated to some warming sunshine in southern France on the way Nice. The riders reported that the tyres stood up well in all conditions, with the 3D interlocking sipes which help to give the tyre it’s name providing fast warm up times even in cold conditions ensuring that they gripped “well on all kinds of surfaces”.
Test rider Simon Weir reported that although the front tyre profile isn’t steep and sporty it still provides fast turning but more importantly it is predictable, giving the rider a constant rate of turn. The riders were also impressed with the stability from the front tyre even under hard braking, as well as the great levels of feedback on poor and patchy surfaces which helped to guide them in terms of how hard to push the bikes.
