When it comes to two-stroke race replicas, the Suzuki RG500 Gamma has a reputation as one of the best there ever was. The Suzuki bike is still seen by many as the closest any manufacturer has come to making a 500GP bike for the street, and next year it will turn 30 years old.
To celebrate the milestone of this imagination capturing piece of two wheel machinery the team at Practical Sportsbike magazine in association with Avon Tyres have been testing out a pretty much immaculate bike which has had just two careful owners since it was registered back in 1987.
Rather than risk running on the vintage part worns, the Practical Sportsbike team opted to change to the Avon Roadrider sport mileage tyre which covers a comprehensive range of sizes for both modern and more traditional motorcycles including the 110/90-16 and 120/90-17 needed for the RG500 Gamma. The Roadrider features a durable compound and large contact patch for excellent grip at all lean angles, and the large central tread grooves also helps to resist ‘white lining’ in order to improve rider safety.
Heading out on new tyres, on to roads that were greasy in places the rider was still unable to resist pushing the Suzuki to feel the full force of it’s renowned acceleration, meaning they are often left putting their faith in the performance of the front tyre as the squeeze hard on the brakes when approaching the bends on several occasions.
After the ride they commented “Every time the Avon comes to my aid, somehow finding the grip to allow me to bring the lever in that bit further” going on to state that “in terms of feel they suit the RG perfectly”.
If you want to get hold of a bike described at “the quickest, fastest 500 rep” which is the “most faithful to its inspiration” you need an RG500 Gamma, and just short of £11,000…..
