April 2015 has seen another big rise in the registration of new motorcycles and scooters in the UK, as the trend of double digit growth continues well into 2015!
Motorcycle registrations for the month of April rose by 12.5% when compared with the same month last year, equivalent to more than 1,000 extra units. However, sales of new mopeds fell once again, down 5% for the month.
As has been the case for some time, the Naked bike segment leads the way with 33.7% growth, whilst the Adventure Sport segment was also up a very strong 27%. Supersport sales also rose 11.7% and sales of Custom bikes were up 8.4%. Scooter sales remained relatively stable, falling by just 2.3% for the month, with Trail & Enduro down 4.3% and Sport Touring down 10.8%. Sales of Touring bikes fell 33.6% for the month, but this only equates to 132 fewer units sold in April 2015.
By engine band, the 0 – 50cc segment was down 9% in April when compared with the same month last year. However, sales of learner legal 51 – 125cc bikes were up 12.6%, or around 430 units. The A2 legal 126 – 650cc engine band was up 15.2%, and the A1 legal 651 – 1000cc engine band was up 28%, a 603 unit increase. The over 1000cc engine band saw a fall in registrations of 5%, equivalent to 109 fewer units sold.
Once again Honda topped the manufacturer sales figures, selling 1,890 units in April, with yamaha in second place selling 1,526 machines. Triumph come in 3rd with 856, followed by BMW (774), Kawasaki (728), Lexmoto (561) and Harley-Davidson (500).
There was a tie at the top of the best selling model statistics this month, with the MT-09 Tracer and Honda PCX125 both selling 200 new units.
By style, the top selling bike models were as follows:

- Custom – Harley-Davidson Softail Breakout
- Naked – Honda CBF125M
- Scooter – Honda PCX125
- Sport Touring – Kawasaki Z1000SX
- Supersport – Yamaha YZF R1
- Touring – BMW R1200 RT
- Trail & Enduro – Honda CRF250L
With the statistics for the first four months of the year now released, there have been a total of 36,199 new motorcycles, scooters and mopeds registered in the UK. At the same time last year, 32,470 units had been sold, so it looks like we are in for another good year!
