Dunlop rider Peter Hickman continued to impress on the roads last weekend, as he took a second victory in as many years at the infamous Macau GP.
Riding the SMT Bathams BMW, Hickman could only qualify in 7th place, with Irish rookie Glenn Irwin catching everyone’s attention as he took 3rd on the grid behind Michael Rutter and Martin Jessopp, who both dipped under the 2.25 barrier.
Often hot and humid, the closed roads Macau GP circuit is a real test for tyres and as is often the case in road racing, it’s a war for supremacy between Dunlop and German brand Metzeler.
Starting in 7th, Hickman worked his way up to 4th place and stayed on the back wheel of Glenn Irwin’s Ducati for several laps until an electrical fault saw the Rookie retire.
Up ahead of him, Jessopp and Rutter battled for the lead, with the latter taking control as Jessopp ran on courtesy of finding a false neutral, as Hickman set his sights on the lead bike as he continued to eat into Rutter’s lead.
On Lap 11, Hickman eventually got the better of his teammate and from there on in he was able to pull away to take the win by just over half a second.
Just 0.655 covered the top three riders as Jessopp recovered on the Riders BMW to take the final podium spot.
