After a dominant season, Pirelli riders are closing in on two major titles at the 2016 FIM Motocross World Championship following the latest results at Frauenfeld in Switzerland.
Purpose built just for this event, a total of 20,000 spectators crammed into the stands around the circuit, which experienced heavy rainfall to make it very muddy and rutted on the Saturday, although it dried out on the Sunday.
The majority of Pirelli riders used the MX Mid Soft 32 on both front and rear, and victories in both the MXGP and MX2 classes mean that the manufacturer has all but claimed it’s 65th and 66th titles at this level.
In the MXGP class, eight time world champion Antonio Cairoli took the overall win on his works 450SX-F followed by Tim Gajsey in second, who still retains the overall championship lead, with Romain Febvre completing a clean sweep of the podium for the Italian brand. The three riders will compete for the title alongside Max Nagl with three rounds to go.
In the MX2 class British rider Max Anstie took an impressive double win followed by Jeremy Seewer in 2nd place at his home round. Seewer is still within touching distance of Jeffrey Herlings as the two go head to head for the MX2 title. Anstie sits in 4th place overall in the championship, but is still 181 points behind the Dutchman.
Pirelli also tasted victory in the women’s race as Courtney Duncan returned to action following a back injury sustained earlier in the year during the German race. Jago Geerts also won the EMX125 race, and has already wrapped up the title.
