Ultra-low emissions vehicles are certainly part of the UK governments plans for the future, and in the motorcycle sector we’ve recently seen some big names come to the forefront of this new market. One of the major problems that the likes of the new Harley-Davidson Live Wire and Victory Empulse TT (pictured) face is the issue of battery range, especially when riding at motorway speeds.
On a recent test of the new Victory machine, which is essentially an upgraded Brammo Empulse R, range was found to be around 80 – 100 miles at best, and with a charging time of 3 hours plus, that could be a long journey from London to Glasgow and back!
With this in mind, Highways England have recently announced that they will be conducting tests of wireless charging technology embedded into road surfaces. Initial tests will be conducted off public roads, and are expected to last around 18 months. If successful, this could be followed by trials on the road network.
Highways England chief highways engineer Mike Wilson said, “We’re committed to supporting the growth of ultra-low emissions vehicles on England’s motorways and major A roads.
“Wireless power technology will help to create a more sustainable road network for England and open up new opportunities for businesses that transport goods across the country.”
Clearly this technology will only help riders who are using a route which includes sections an adequate intervals which incorporate wireless charging technology, but it could be just the thing the electric motorcycle sector needs to really help it take off in the longer term!
