With vintage styling being all the rage at the minute, it’s no surprise that the Bonneville T100 is currently a big seller for Triumph.
Many of the bikes are used as a base by custom builders, who modify the look, occasionally add a bash-plate, slap on a pair of Continental TKC 80 tyres (which are surprisingly good on the road) and turn it into a scrambler!
However, whilst these are the bikes that are getting lot’s of attention across the internet, many riders are simply buying them to ride on the roads as they come from the factory, both for pleasure and commuting.
So, if you’re buying it for use on the roads, and you’re looking for tyres, what are your options?
Our very own Bryn Phillips helped one MCN reader discover his options in their 22nd July 2015 edition, and recommended a number of manufacturers.
The original equipment tyres are a 100/90-19 57H Metzeler Lasertec on the front, and a 130/80-17 65H ME Z2 on the rear, and with the Bonneville being somewhat tyre sensitive, these offer good stability.
A sportier option would be the Avon Roadrider, a well regarded cross-ply, or the popular Bridgestone BT45. The Dunlop StreetSmart sits somewhere between the two, offering a great balance of performance and durability.
With spoked wheels, many riders assume that the Bonneville cannot run tubeless tyres. This is not the case, as it is possible to fit a tubeless tyre along with an appropriately sized inner tube. Tubes should be changed along with the tyre, as they also suffer wear and tear during their service life and form an integral part of the tyre/wheel system.
