Avoiding Flat Spots This Winter

Best year round scooter tyre? With many riders storing their bikes over winter, our very own Bryn Phillips was recently asked a question in Motorcycle News by an end user who wanted to avoid flat spots.

The rider was storing his GSX-R600 using a rear wheel paddock stand, and was worried about the front tyre supporting all the weight of the bike over the next few months.

The best way to avoid flat spotting is to then lift the front wheel, and turn it every week or so. If you are parking your bike on a cold, hard surface such as a garage floor, Bryn also advises placing a piece of cut-off carpet underneath the tyre.

Some riders still believe that cold concrete reacts with the rubber to draw out the silica, which is not true, but the carpet will at least cushion the tyre during a period of storage.
