KTM’s new 790 Adventure was probably the most hotly anticipated new adventure bike of the year (although no doubt the good people at Yamaha will wish to contest that with their new Tenere 700, which is now rolling off the production lines).
At 189kg with a full tank of fuel, the KTM is hardly a light bike, but it still tips the scales at considerably less than some of the bigger adventure machines on the market, most notably the BMW R1250GS which comes in at more than 250kg.
As Bike magazine recently found out during their long term test the KTM can quite easily achieve 70mpg,which equates to around 300 miles from a full 20 litre tank of fuel which is ideal for touring.
The engine, which has been adapted from the critically acclaimed 790 Duke, also proved to be great fun as the testers worked to make the most of every single one of those 95 horses!
If you’re sticking to the tarmac, then the KTM comes on the Avon TrailRider as original equipment, and Bike had this to say about them after covering around 3,000 miles:
“Avon TrailRiders were a new one on us, but we can see why KTM chose them. Dry grip is superb. The rear starts to squirm if you continually get on the power early out of corners but the feedback is clear and the traction control is never troubled.
Both tyres do get very hot though, which perhaps explains why wear is greater than expected.”
