Celebrations have started early for Slovenian motocross star Tim Gajser, who sealed the MXGP title in Imola last weekend with three rounds of the season still remaining.
The Honda HRC rider, who rides on Pirelli tyres, already held a big lead over Jeremy Seewer of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory heading into the Italian GP, and a fifth place in the opening moto was enough to seal the title.
Following that result Gajser, who also took the MXGP title in 2016, went into the second moto with a 181-point lead, with a maximum of just 175 remaining. That means Seewer and a host of other riders will now be fighting it out for second place starting this coming weekend in Sweden, with the season finale taking place in China on 15th September.
Pirelli’s excellent run ot back-to-back championships is also set to continue in the MX2 class, with Red Bull KTM’s Jorge Prado 130-points ahead of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Thomas Kjer Olsen. If Prado takes victory in the opening moto in Sweden next weekend, the 18-year old will take his second straight title on Pirelli motocross rubber. if Prado does the almost inevitable and wins the MX2 championship, he’ll then have to step up to the MXGP paddock next season.
Pirelli riders have dominated the MXGP and MX2 classes this season, with the Scorpion Mid Soft MX32 proving to be their most popular tyre, offering excellent versatility across a wide range of tracks.
