As of next year, a host of popular models currently used to take the full ‘A’ licence motorcycle test in the UK will become ineligible due to rule changes being brought in by the DVSA.
At present, you can take your test on a machine which has a capacity of 595cc and above, and a total power output of at least 40kW (54bhp).
However, from 1st January 2019, any bike used for the ‘A’ test must have a total power output of at least 50kW (67bhp), and a kerb weight of at least 180kg.
If you were planning on taking your test on one of the following bikes after the New Year, you’ll need to think again:
- Harley Davidson Street 750 or XL883
- KTM 690 Duke
- Kawasaki Vulcan or Vulcan S
- Honda NC750 (S or X)
- Suzuki Burgman 650
- Triumph Street Cup
- Yamaha XV950 or XV950R
The above is not an exhaustive list, so if in doubt, check with your local training school for further details.
Hopefully these changes won’t put any prospective riders off doing their full test, but it will certainly have an impact on some training schools who may rely on a fleet of soon-to-be ineligible models.
