With sports touring tyres continuing to push the boundaries of performance ever further with each passing year, the list of machines for which they are a recommended fitment becomes longer and longer.
In this week’s issue of Motorcycle News, our very own Bryn Phillips helps one reader with his fitment dilemma.
The rider in question covers around 2,500 to 3,000 miles a year on his ZZR1400, including some pretty brisk riding while in the midst of completing his IAM course.
So, do you go for a hypersport tyre, or a sport touring tyre?
With an annual mileage like that, both would be suitable options.
However, a switch to a sport touring tyre will offer superior tread life, smoother ride comfort ,and in most cases, increased wet grip.
Some riders may notice a small reduction in handling response, although the very latest crop of sport touring tyres are much better in this respect.
Many ZZR1400 riders ask for ‘GT’ specification sports touring tyres, but manufacturers do not consider the Kawasaki to be a heavy tourer, so standard specification tyres are recommended:
- Avon Spirit ST
- Bridgestone T30 EVO
- Dunlop RoadSmart III
- Metzeler Roadtec 01
- Michelin Pilot Road 4
- Pirelli Angel GT
Note that the ‘GT’ in Angel GT does not mean it is for heavier bikes. Pirelli produce the Angel GT ‘A’ spec tyre specifically for heavier bikes, just to confuse things.
