Successful Week For Avon At Sidecar TT

Avon Sidecar TyresDespite a stormy start, this year’s Isle of Man TT has been one of the best yet – with amazing racing, fascinating back stories and excellent weather (eventually).

British tyre manufacturer Avon have been exceptionally busy, thanks to their heavy involvement in the sidecar class.

Following a heavy crash in 2014, Birchall brothers Ben & Tom came to the island with their LCR Honda hoping for success. The brothers, from Mansfield, were rewarded for their efforts winning the first race by 25 seconds, with two further Avon shod teams also taking 2nd and 3rd place.

They then swept to a 2nd impressive victory on Wednesday afternoon, winning by a smaller margin of just 7 seconds. However, this time the brothers had broken the race record time – setting a new benchmark of 58:24.971 to complete 3 laps of the 37.73 mile mountain course.

The fellow Avon supported team of Dave Molyneux and Ben Binns also broke the long standing lap record as they tried in vain to chase down the Birchalls, setting an average speed of 116.785mph on their final lap of race two.

Following the event an Avon representative commented:

“This TT has been intense with the storms in practice week that nearly blew us away leaving the teams very little practice time. When they did get to race the pace was incredible with the top three teams all lapping in the 116 mph bracket. Looking further down the results sheet there were some great rides and our tyres performed well in this most extreme of races.”
