Racetec RR CompK Slick Tested

Metzeler Comp K Slick review

Metzeler overhauled their CompK slick at the beginning of last year with the introduction of the Racetec RR Comp K Slick, which was billed as a real upgrade in performance over it’s predecessor.

Designed for riders who want to spend more time on track, and less time in the garage setting up their bike around the tyre, the CompK range is certainly winning favour with club racers and track-dayers alike.

In the previous issue of Fast Bikes, TT racer and regular Columnist Gary Johnson gave his view on them:

“My mate told me about the CompK slicks at the start of this year.He kept banging on about them and told me I needed to give them a try, so I did. I didn’t read too much into the spec, because I didn’t want other people’s thoughts to shape my opinion, so I just got them on my ZX-10R and took them for a spin at Donington Park for the first round of the No Limits championship.

They impressed me. The edge grip wasn’t the best, but I was surprised by how hard you could drive on them and how supportive they felt. I got some good results, so decided to give them a second go at Cadwell Park, in very cold conditions, and was comfortably banging in 1m 31s laps. They did such a mega job that I’ve been using them ever since, often opting to ride on them in place of a thoroughbred racing tyre. These work far better in the cold than any other slick out there and they’re really good at talking to you and giving you plenty of warning when you start pushing their limits. In extremely hot conditions, they may lose a bit of grip, but unless you’re banging in really fast times, you’d never know any difference to a typical slick.

For me, racing on a budget, the best thing about them is they never wear out. I’ve clocked so many laps on these tyres and they never look knackered. I’m not saying you can’t do better, but the CompK has shown me that it’s more than capable of delivering on track.”
