With 66 World titles to their name since 1980, it’s fair to say that Pirelli has been pretty successful in the FIM Motocross World Championship.
A list of illustrious names including 7 time World Champion Stefan Everts and current title holders Tim Gajser and Jeffrey Herlings have all won their respective classes on Pirelli Scorpion motocross rubber.
Keen to continue this impressive run of success, the Italian tyre maker has just announced a renewed partnership with series organiser Youthstream, which will see them remain as an official tyre partner until the end of the 2019 season.
Last year Pirelli produced a total of 7,000 tyres for the series in various specifications, of which 1,700 were actually used.
This season 23 or the 24 MXGP and MX2 races to date have been won by Pirelli riders, with the top four riders in each class all on the Italian manufacturer’s rubber.
Giorgio Barbier, Pirelli’s Head of Moto Racing Activities commented:
“For Pirelli, the FIM Motocross World Championship continues to be a top activity in which we have always believed in and continue to do so, for this reason we have decided to renew our partnership with Youthstream until 2019. Particularly during the last years, we have had the chance to witness and contribute to the exponential growth of this championship which today features a large number of both riders and manufacturers and, most of all, a great media visibility, not only in the Old Continent but also in Asia and in South and North America, also thanks to its calendar including as many as 19 rounds, 6 of which outside Europe. This World Championship is an exceptional stage for us to create brand awareness in some Countries which are very important for our business and, at the same time, a perfect proving ground to develop the tyres with which we are increasing over the decades our silverware in this, the most important motocross championship.”
David Luongo, Vice-President of Youthstream and Head of Operations stated:
“Pirelli shares the same vision of what is to be a World Championship, to be a global brand all around the continents and we want to thank them for being with us for so many years. This renewal for a long term collaboration will help us to continue the opening of new markets for the MXGP World Championship. This has always been a target for Youthstream, and thanks to the interest and investment of such partner the MXGP is living a fantastic dynamic nowadays”.
