In the first part of the recent Performance Bikes blind tyre test of fast road and track day rubber, thye Continental ContiRaceAttack Comp Endurance was one of the surprise packages – with road tester John McAvoy awarding the tyre the highest personal score of all 7 he tested.
In their August 2015 edition, Performance Bikes headed to Rockingham circuit for the second part of the test – putting all 7 of the tyres through their paces on circuit. Accompanying John McAvoy on the test was GP winner Jeremy McWilliams, also blind testing.
Rockingham is just about the perfect test circuit, packing in long traction heavy corners, heavy braking zones, bumps, and both fast and slow direction changes, which challenge every aspect of tyre behaviour over the course it’s 1.94 mile length. The test bike of choice was the latest BMW S1000RR, supposedly of the most popular bikes in the UK for sticky track day rubber, with it’s than 190+ bhp making it very hard on rubber.
With tyre warmers, Jeremy McWilliams set fast, data logged laps of the track using their Racelogic VBOX. John was thrown in at the deep end, and tested all the tyres without warmers to see how they perform from cold.
The ContiRaceAttack Comp Endurance, with Jeremy McWilliams on the BMW S1000RR, set the fastest lap of the test, recording a 1:27.61 around Rockingham – four hundredths of a second faster than the Supercorsa SP V2 which came in 2nd place. It was also faster than the likes of the new Metzeler Racetec RR K3 and Dunlop D211 GP Racer.
John McAvoy also once again gave the Continental his highest personal score of any of the seven tyres tested at Rockingham, 47 out of a potential 50.
The two riders gave their feedback and scores on a number of factors:
- Stability
“Zero complaints. The rear isn’t the grippiest on this test, but because the stability is so good, it is all ok, even over bumps at full lean” – McAvoy
- Turn-in
“The best bit of this tyre. I love the way that this tyre turns, especially at high speed” – McAvoy
- Mid-corner
“Very solid, very stable, very easy to change line mid-corner. Lots of confidence. The bike feels light on these” – McAvoy
- Exit Grip
“Some deterioration over distance. Tyre stays pretty consistent and keeps driving even if some spin occurs” – McWilliams
- Feel
“Some creeping on peak torque but very good feedback. Feels great on maximum lean. Very good bump absorption” – McWilliams
Summing up John said the Conti’s were “a really nice set of tyres. I could have carried on lapping all day on these quite happily, and put the bike anywhere.” Jeremy followed up with his feedback saying that the tyre “starts up after half a lap and is at it’s best from laps three to eight. I’d happily use this tyre for both road and track.”
