As the sun came down on the final day of the prestigious North West 200 road race in Northern Ireland, Metzeler were preparing to celebrate as their riders claimed 7 wins out of a possible 8 during the famous meeting.
Alastair Seeley went into the 2018 meeting as the most successful rider in it’s history, with 21 wins to his name so far. The ‘Wee Wizard’ from Carrickfergus opened his campaign in style, taking the first Supersport race win by 2.447s, with fellow Metzeler competitor James Hillier in second.
Seeley then went toe-to-toe with Peter Hickman (Dunlop) in the first Supersport contest, with the BSB star leaving it to the final throws of the race to take the popular win on the BMW.
Martin Jessop would take a second win for Metzeler on the opening day, as he topped the Supertwin race with Joey Thompson also on the podium after a stunning performance on the Paton S1 by the relative newcomer.
Blue skies greeted the riders on Saturday, and the opening Supersport race was a carbon copy of that on Thursday as Seeley took the win from Hillier.
Glenn Irwin then went on to dominate the first Superbike contest for Be Wiser PBM Ducati, as he controlled the race from the very start to cross the line ahead of Dean Harrison and Michael Rutter, securing a podium lock-out for Metzeler and their Racetec RR Slick tyres.
The second Supertwin contest saw James Cowton clinch his first ever international road race win, with Thompson doubling up on podiums in the class as he once again claimed 3rd on the Paton.
Seeley then went on to make it three wins, taking his NW200 tally to 24, as he pulled off a stunning last lap victory over Hickman in the second Superstock contest.
In the blue-riband feature race, Glenn Irwin once again got off to a strong start on the Ducati, pulling out a 3 second lead by the end of the opening lap. For the remaining six laps, Irwin looked well in control as he secured his second win of the day, and the third of his NW200 career.
Metzeler UK Racing Manager Jason Griffiths commented:
“The 2018 North West 200 has been another fantastic event for Metzeler. Taking seven wins, at the hands of four different riders, with both our RACETEC™ RR Slick tyres and the road legal RACETEC™ RR treaded tyres shows the versatility and competitiveness of the Metzeler range.
A sincere thanks to all of our riders, and congratulations to Alastair, Martin, Glenn and James on the wins. We now head to the Isle of Man TT next weekend where we look forward to challenging for further success.”
