With an increased Maxxis range for 2014, we are always keen to hear what is being said about their latest tyres.
In the latest issue of Fast Bikes, Simon Roots took his long term KTM 1290 Super Duke R to Wales, to discover the best roads that our little country has to offer (and there’s plenty of them, trust us!)
The big KTM naked bike was shod with the eye-catching Maxxis SuperMaxx Diamond tyres, and in their “Wales Ride Guide”, the magazine gave them a glowing review saying “they proved to offer a great blend of grip, reassurance and stability on this booming bike.”
The standout feature of of the Maxxis is the diamond shoulder tread pattern, but it’s much more than just cosmetic as Fast Bikes explain:
“The use of the shoulder pattern is clear – to give enhanced grip and feel at the edge, especially so when conditions aren’t as clement as you’d hope for. You can feel the tyres move onto this part of the rubber when you start to reach some interesting lean angles, and while a little strange the first time round, you soon get used to the reaction of the tyre – and, indeed, look for it as a judge of angle. But the advantages of a pattern like this are clear when it’s wet. While other tyres become nigh-on slick in this area, the SuperMaxx Diamonds come into their own. They’re not quite a race wet, but they’re as close as you’re going to get with a road tyre, and they’re not the compromise you might think they would be in the dry.”
The SuperMaxx Diamond is reported to have a 10% larger footprint at 35 degree lean angles, and a new Ultra tread compound delivers improved dry traction under both acceleration and braking. The sidewalls have also been stiffened to improve stability and handling consistency.
