Replacing the aged Distanzia, the new road biased Avon TrailRider was recently launched to the world press in Germany.
Coming in a wide range of sizes, it’s got a difficult job to do – satisfy the adventure bike market. Owners of adventure bikes expect a lot from their tyres:
- Good mileage
- Excellent wet grip
- Neutral handling on all types of road surface
- A rugged look, and even a touch of off-road capability too
The launch started off in Munich, giving journalists the chance to test the new Avon on the twisty roads leading to the Bavarian Mountains, with some urban riding, autobahn stretches, and light off-road thrown in for good measure.
Included on the launch was Jonathan Pearson of Bike Social, who gave his thoughts on this new British made tyre:
“The TrailRider lived up to the task all the way from the moment we first rolled up the road to the high-speed Bahn-blast back eight hours later. They feel consistent and sure-footed which is a massive cliché but frankly it’s the simple truth.
Warm-up is good but then it should have been in the humid central European weather we experienced on this launch test – I’d like to try them in colder climes to test that aspect better though. A reassuring hold on the Tarmac remains consistent with no peaks or troughs in performance as the ride switched from slow, busy streets to fast blasts up mountain passes or 100mph on the German motorway.”

The new TrailRider will be available in 18 sizes, both radial and cross-ply. Avon claim it is their most advanced tyre yet, using Sipe Technology borrowed from their ‘3D’ product line, and their new Advanced Variable Belt Density’ technology to control tyre temperature and deformation under load.
