Sponsored by Avon Tyres, Earthroamers have for some time been travelling around the world on the aged Distanzia adventure tyre.
However, with the release of the new TrailRider from Avon in 2015, who better to give their latest adventure rubber a test out in the wilds of Eastern Europe?
After changing the tyres on their Triumph Bonneville, it was evident that the new TrailRider provided a much lighter feel than the Distanzia:
“I can throw them into corners like I did with the Avon Distanzia and slam on the brakes without needing to wish for ABS” they say. “The lighter steering makes it easier to correct halfway through a corner and yet they are stable at higher speeds too.”
They also fitted the new TrailRider on their XT660R, with steering again proving to be a little lighter, but with the bike developing a nervous, twitchy feel at the rear. However, a quick call to Ashley Vowles, Avon’s Technical Designer and architect of the new TrailRider saw them drop the pressure in the front by 4psi to cure the problem.
Ashley explained: “While the TrailRider has been developed for larger Adventure machines, we have enough flexibility built-in so that we can alter the pressure to improve handling and stability on lighter machines too.”
After 5,000 kilometres of hot, abrasive tarmac and rocky paths Earthroamers have used around 2mm of tread, so are expecting Distanzia like mileage from these tyres, if not a little more!
