The Avon 3D Ultra Xtreme is the British based manufacturer’s track day rubber featuring a super sticky compound, large contact patch at extreme lean angles and 3D interlocking sipes which limit tread flex, whilst improving grip and stability.
On a recent trip to Cartagena for a 3 day track day, Visordown’s Luke Bowler decided to step into the unknown and give the Avon’s a try.
The first thing he noticed was the difference in profile between the Avon and his previous tyre. The Avon offered extra stability with it’s less steep profile, although this led to a slower turn it, but as Luke said, it’s all down to preference and what makes you feel most comfortable out on circuit.
Cartagena is an abrasive circuit, and you spend about 80% of your time each lap on the side of the tyres, with an abundance of fast corners and heavy braking zones. After several sessions Luke hit a wall, unable to push himself and the bike around Cartagena any faster, and the Xtremes didn’t even break into a sweat. To see just how capable they were, he admits he was “piling into corners 10mph faster and getting on the gas as early as I dared. They just laughed in my face and stayed planted.”
He was also extremely impressed by the feedback from the Avon’s, especially at the front. The slow, off-camber Turn 16 hairpin is an ideal spot to test the front end, and Luke says he always had enough notice when the front end was close to it’s limits, giving him plenty of confidence to push as hard as he could.
The Avon’s kept his R6 upright over two solid days of abuse, with easily another two left in the rear. As Liam says, what more could you possibly ask for?
