Taking his £500 Honda track hack to Rockingham for a recent No Limits track day, The Daily Star’s Mark Forsyth had his first taste of the latest Avon 3D Ultra Xtreme race tyres in some rather sketchy conditions.
The eagle eyed among you will probably already have spotted that the above bike is not a Honda, nor is it worth a mere £500 – but as the copyright disclaimer makes it clear we can’t reproduce the image from the original article without express permission from the newspaper itself, a shot of a BMW from the official launch will have to do instead.
Revamped for 2016, the Avon range is now available in a range of compounds both front and rear, giving the rider more choice depending upon both conditions and personal preference to find the ideal setup for them.
Rockingham has developed something of a reputation for it’s inconsistent grip levels, and some of the walls around the circuit are more than a little close for comfort when you’re on two wheels. This certainly wasn’t helped by the heavy rain which fell prior to the opening session.
In their 17th July publication Mark says:
“I wobbled round nervously for a session or two and then as the track dried I upped the pace a bit.
By the end of the day, with one knee-slier through to the Velcro backing, I thought these tyres were the business. The steering feels faster and more neutral and the edge grip is frankly ridiculous.
I used to race on Avons 20 years ago and I reckon their tyres have progressed a lot more than I have in that time.
There’s one thing we both have in common now – we’re both a bit bald and frazzled around the edges.”
