Despite new bike sales not being able to match the near 20% growth seen in June, figures were still very positive for the overall market in July with a 14% rise in sales when compared with the previous month in 2014.
New motorcycle and scooter sales were actually up 17.7% for the month, equivalent to more than 1,500 additional units, but moped sales were down once again, with a 15.5% drop in July.
Adventure Sport bikes saw the biggest rise in sales, with a 28.8% increase, whilst Naked bikes continued strong growth up 27.1%. Supersport sales also saw double digit growth on 17.7%, with Trail & Enduro up 13.9%, Custom bikes up 11.2% and Touring sales rising by 10.8%. Scooter sales and Sport Touring sales also saw modest growth, up 7.8% and 3.8% respectively.
The only engine size band which saw a drop in sales was the 0 – 50cc segment, which fell 15.0% for the month. The learner legal 51 – 125cc segment was up 22.1%, or more than 800 units – hopefully a strong indication that more and more people are turning to motorcycles for commuting, pleasure or both! The A2 licence legal 126 – 650cc engine band was up a modest 6.9%, whilst the A1 legal 651 – 1000cc band rose 28.3% – or 540 extra units sold. Sales of motorcycles over 1000cc saw a modest increase of 4.3%.
Honda once again saw more new machines registered than any other manufacturer, their CB125F coming in as the top selling model of the month, with 207 being registered across the UK. In total Honda sold 1,793 new machines, followed by Yamaha in second place with 1,378. A surprise entry in third place is Lexmoto, who sold 776 new machines, with BMW not far behind them on 752. Triumph drop to fifth place in July, selling 706 new bikes, with Suzuki and Kawasaki completing the top manufacturer table on 657 and 590 respectively.
By style, the top selling bike models this month were as follows:
- Adventure Sport – BMW S1000XR
- Custom – Yamaha YBR125 Custom

- Scooter – Honda PCX125
- Sport Touring – BMW R1200RT
- Supersport – Honda CBR125R
