Years of R&D, and millions of pounds are invested by tyre manufacturers as they strive to increase quality with every product that they produce, and that’s certainly the case with the new Avon TrailRider too.
Designed as a replacement for the Distanzia, and to satisfy the needs of the growing adventure bike market both in the UK and abroad, it is the British manufacturer’s most advanced motorcycle tyre to date.
So, what’s gone into the new TrailRider?
Firstly, two years of work….
The TrailRider carcass, which is based on their Storm 3D X-M sport touring tyre, has been designed to deliver improved grip and handling. Advanced Variable Belt technology does a delicate balancing act, providing stiffness and flex in the right areas of the tyre, whilst a zero-degree steel belt around the circumference of the tyre limits tyre growth at high speeds.
Chemists at Avon have also come up with a new tri-compound formula which improves wet grip, but doesn’t affect mileage. The centre of the radial construction rear tyre has a harder, more durable compound, whilst the edges are softer to give improved grip when cornering. Underneath all that is a resilient low-hysteresis bonding compound.
Enhanced Aqua Flow grooves are used to channel water away more effectively from around the contact patch area.
The TrailRider also used the 3D Sipe which is found across the whole of their 3D road and track tyre range. The Sipe dates back to the 1920s, when USA based John F Sipe cut grooves into his rubber-soled shoes to stop himself from slipping on the wet floor of the slaughterhouse he worked in at the time. Sipe found that his alteration greatly enhanced the grip his shoes provided on wet floors, and patented his idea.
Sipe’s patent was eventually picked up by Goodyear in the 1950s, and his son Harry was instrumental in spreading it’s use in tyres across America during this time.
Avon’s 3D Sipes contain interlocking teeth, which allow them to flex in certain directions and to certain extents, controlling heat build-up in the tyre and stabilising the tread blocks under load.
With a range of 18 sizes, there are fitments for many popular adventure machines.
