The new Supermaxx ST is Maxxis’s latest sport touring tyre, and was developed in conjunction with BSB star Chris ‘Stalker’ Walker.
The upgraded hoops use a new Silica Plus Compound, 3D Sipes, and Mono-Spiral Steel Belts to create a tyre which offers better all-round grip, improved stability and a more consistent wear rate throughout it’s life. They are aimed at mid-to-heavyweight sports-tourers and big naked style bikes.
So, what are they like?
In the May 6th edition of Motorcycle News, Deputy Editor Richard Newland reflects on his 1,100 mile test on the middleweight Yamaha MT-07:
“It’s worth noting that they took 150 miles to really feel like they’d scrubbed in, which is unusual these days” explains Richard. “Feedback was also sketchy, with the first 15 miles producing some front and rear slides. Once they’d completed 20 miles this never happened again, but I would suggest initial caution on an unladen sports tourer with double the torque of an MT-07 – especially if you’ve got a heavy right hand.”
Get past these teething troubles, though, and the STs start to work well. They reward fast smooth riding with predictable grip, warm up quickly, and perform with consistent stability under hard braking in all conditions. Even when reasonably provoked, the rear wouldn’t break traction either in the wet or dry.
All in all, these appear to be ideal for riders of more weighty sports-tourers, looking for mileage and consistency from a reasonably steady riding style. Faster tourers will want more feel and feedback, and would likely be prepared to trade a little tyre life for the deal.”
