Pirelli and Ducati continue to strengthen their close ties, as the Italian tyre maker’s Diablo Supercorsa SP is announced as the OE fitment for the new 1299 Panigale, Panigale S and Panigale R.
The Pirelli tyres will be supplied in 120/70 ZR17 front and 200/55 ZR17 rear sizes, and are aimed at sporty road riders, and are also suitable for trackday use. The rear Diablo Supercorsa SP features a dual compound construction, which allows it to better adapt to street use, when compared with it’s cousin, the Diablo Supercorsa SC. It offers more regular wear, and improvements in mileage as a result.
Pirelli have used Enhanced Patch Technology, which has allowed them to use 23% more soft compound in the shoulder area of the rear, compared with the previous SP. This provides better grip at mid to full lean angles. New polymers used in the compound also allow the tyre to warm up faster, for improved grip in all weather conditions.
The performance of the new compounds is further enhanced by the use of a single element tread pattern, which is designed to revolve six times on the surface of the tyre. The result is that the “naked” area on the slick shoulders is now 24% wider, when compared to the previous Diablo Supercorsa, which leads to an increase in both contact area and grip. The long longitudinal grooves, expanding from the central area to the shoulder, promote a more regular wear pattern during the life of the tyre, and help water drainage.
The rear tyre also now has a carcass made from an innovative high module fibre, which has a much lower deformation ratio, creating a more rigid tyre, ideal for dealing with the additional stresses of aggressive cornering and acceleration.
