After being highly impressed with the new Avon Storm 3D X-M at the official launch earlier this year, the British based manufacturer decided to supply our very own Dave Humphreys with a long term test set which have now covered around 4,000 miles after a recent jaunt from Mid Wales to the south of France.
The range of sizes has been greatly expanded this year, and with plenty of time, and miles to test their performance Dave gives us his thoughts on how they have got on so far:
“Day one in France was reminiscent of the Storm 3D launch back in May, the rain was relentless for most of the 400 mile journey and it was a relief to park up for the night. The following day the sun came out and the temperature climbed as we neared the Mediterranean coastal town of Argeles our base for the next week.
A couple of daytrips and a hairy rollercoaster ride over the Pyrenees into Spain and the week was over. A short 130 mile ride to our final night on the coast at Aigues-Mortes (and my first day being fifty) then we headed north up into the hills on the A75, the most scenic motorway I’ve ever ridden on, over the Millau Viaduct and finally stopping in Bourges for the night before the last 300 miles back to the ferry in St-Malo.
To date I’ve covered just short of 4000 miles and still have 3mm tread left on the front tyre and 4.5mm on the rear (4mm and 8mm new) so I’d expect a couple of thousand miles more before I need to change the rear which will far exceed the mileage of any previous tyres I’ve used.
I would have expected the rear tyre to have squared off to some extent, when you consider that over half the mileage covered has been two up with luggage, but not a bit of it and the front tyre still looks as good as new.
The performance of the Storm 3D X-M has been faultless in all conditions from torrential rain in northern France, sun baked greasy mountain roads in Spain and now back to our super abrasive local welsh roads.
If you want a tyre that will cope with all conditions and give excellent mileage returns these could be the tyres for you.”
