This weekend saw the final round of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship at Loket in the Czech Republic. At the head of the field with a four point advantage was Kiara Fontanesi, the only competitor in the field running Dunlop tyres, chasing a third consecutive WMX title.
On her Dunlop Geomax MX-32 and MX-52 shod Yamaha, Kiara got off to the perfect start with a win in the first moto, and followed that up with a third place to win her 3rd title in a row by the tightest of margins in one of the closest seasons that fans have seen in years.
Fontanesi led the first race from start to finish, but the second race was a much tougher competition with fellow rider Megan Rutledge doing her absolute best to spoil the Italian’s party in order to take the win she needed as an absolute minimum to win the title.
Ultimately neither of the two championship riders took to the top of the race 2 podium as Livia Lancelot sneaking through whilst Fontanesi focused on the result she needed to secure the gold plate. This season Kiara was only outside the top three in two of the twelve motos. Her 2014 record includes four moto wins, one grand prix victory and four second place finishes.
Eddy Seel, Dunlop MX race coordinator said: “We are very happy for Kiara. She rode very well this weekend and if she wasn’t riding for the title could have won another grand prix this weekend.”
In MXGP, Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Gautier Paulin had a strong race following his return from injury to reclaim two of the championship positions he lost during his time off the bike. If he hadn’t hit the gate at the start of the second moto, the Frenchman could easily have been on the podium but instead he took fourth place having finished sixth in the first race. His team-mate Steven Frossard finished the event in sixth with Team HRC’s Max Nagl in eighth after being classified fourth in race one and 17th in the second after an early crash.
The Loket track also held the penultimate round of the all-Dunlop Honda 150 European Championship. British rider Albie Wilkie won his fourth race and third consecutive Grand Prix and now holds a ten point lead going into the final round in Lommel, Belgium.
