As the largest UK two wheel customer of Avon Tyres, it was great to be invited along to the recent launch of the Avon Storm 3D X-M which set off from their base at Melksham in Wiltshire. We sent along experienced sales team member Dave Humphrey’s and this is what he thought:
“I was honoured to be invited to the launch of Avon’s new flagship sport touring tyre the Storm 3D X-M which they describe as a Hyper Sport Touring tyre with extended mileage (X-M).
We arrived at Avon’s rain soaked HQ in Melksham for a very informative talk from Ashley Vowles, their motorcycle tyre designer, then headed out to pick a bike. I jumped on the 1200 Super Tenere and we headed out into to mid-morning traffic. After a leisurely hour or so we arrived at Cheddar Gorge for a quick coffee then tried out various different bikes on the twisty roads around the Gorge.
We had a quite spirited ride back to base, this time on a Z1000SX. Throughout the day I rode various bikes including Suzuki’s mighty Hayabusa, Triumph’s hooligan Speed Triple and the way too tall for me Tiger Explorer, the tyres were impeccable all day in the most horrendous conditions.
One week on I have a pair on my own bike and even though I’ve only put a couple of hundred miles on them I like the way they turn in quickly but without feeling nervous like some of the modern Sport Touring tyres I’ve used.
I’m off to France in August with about 2000 miles of mixed riding planned and I’ll probably have covered 1000 – 1500 miles before I go and as I’ve yet to get more than 4000 miles out of the last 5 sets of tyres I’ve used so it will be interesting to see if the X-M claims hold up.”
