During the first official BSB test of 2014 three time former champion Shane Byrne just beat Josh Brookes of Milwaukee Yamaha to the top of the timesheets, with a lap time of 1:29.550s which was faster than the existing Donington Park lap record.
This was the first official opportunity for the riders to try out the latest 17″ Diablo Superbike tyre, which has been developed in World Superbike by the Italian manufacturer.
Despite it being a test, a good crowd turned out for the day’s events and as the damp morning gave way to a warm and sunny afternoon the riders took to the track for the two afternoon sessions with some very impressive lap times.
Following the session Pirelli Racing Manager Jason Griffiths commented, “It’s been another positive test on the new 17” tyres, with all the riders backing up the positive progress which they made in Spain. Shane set his best time on the new softer SC0 compound, which backs up his full race simulation on the tyre at Almeria last week. We now look forward to the two day test at Snetterton next week before we get the season underway at Brands Hatch over the Easter weekend.”
