If you’re a fan of Metzeler’s Roadtec 01 sport touring tyre, and many riders are, then you may have noticed that the German brand has updated it this year!
The latest Roadtec 01 SE, which has taken over from the standard tyre in selected sizes, definitely pitches itself towards the sportier side of sports touring.
Metzeler’s design team have increased the land/ sea ratio of the tyre at lean, with a slick section of rubber on the edge of the tread putting more rubber on the road when you’ve got the bike banked right over, for increased grip and control.
Normally when you hear the word ‘sportier’ you’d be forgiven for thinking ‘reduced mileage’ but Metzeter state that the new Roadtec 01 SE still benefits from the same level of durability seen with the original tyre.
They’re also retained that race wet style tread pattern for excellent all-weather grip!
Metzeler were quite possibly the only tyre maker who managed to hold something akin to a tyre launch just before the Covid-19 travel restrictions started to come into force across Europe.
Both MCN and Visordown were lucky enough to make it to the event in Ronda, Spain and were suitably impressed by the performance of the new Metzeler rubber.
In his review for MCN, Senior Tester Michael Neeves commented:
“For hard braking and acceleration in the wet the Metzelers are astonishing and it’s tricky to get the traction control or ABS to ever chime in even when you ride the wet track like it’s dry. Cornering grip is just as impressive.
For all-weather, big mileage riders (expect around 6-8000 miles from a rear, or more) looking for a tyre to look after them in all conditions, the new Metzeler Roadtec 01 SE carry on from their predecessor as being the new go-to sports touring tyre.”

Spot The Difference...
Some standard 01 sizes remain in the less popular sizes like 120/60 ZR17 and they can be mixed with the new ‘SE’ variant so riders should check the Metzeler online fitment guide or consult their local dealer for information pertaining to their particular machine.
The original Roadtec 01 HWM tyre for heavier touring machines also remains in the range.
However, the Metzeler approved fitment for a number of heavy touring bikes was previously a standard Roadtec 01 for the front, with the Roadtec 01 HWM for the rear. These now switch to the Roadtec 01 SE both front and back.
