Modern day sport touring tyres are something of an engineering marvel.
They’re a one-size-fits-all solution for so many bikes, capable of a thousand mile European tour and even the odd track day in the summer, while providing steadfast grip throughout the incessant wind and rains of winter.
It’s no surprise that they feature a lot in bike magazines during the colder months, and two leading publications have recently been checking out Metzeler’s Roadtec 01.
In their March issue, John Westlake at Bike commented:
“These are the best sport touring tyres I’ve ever used. The grip in cold, wet conditions is, frankly astonishing.
Trying to get them to trigger the traction control on the Fireblade in dodgy winter conditions resulted in monster acceleration – only over cats-eyes did they lose grip.
Steering is neutral, stability perfect. Early days in terms of wear, and I haven’t troubled the edges much yet either, but it’s a hugely impressive start.”
MCN’s James Archibald has also been using a pair for the last 4,000 miles and reviewed their performance in last week’s issue:
“When I decided to test these Metzeler tyres, I was after something that would do a bit of everything and do it well. I was completely blown away by just how good they were.
They take very little time to warm up, and offer plenty of flattering feedback – regardless of the bike you ride. They’re also a fantastic tyre in wet and cold conditions – something we’re not short of here in the UK – are are reassuring on track too (although this does shorten the lifespan considerably).
I’ve used them on MCN’s Kawasaki Ninja 650 and my own ZX-6R, and on both bikes they’ve complimented the suspension very well. I love them, and they’re near faultless.
You’d hope to get some decent mileage out of a sport-touring tyre – especially given that they don’t come cheap.
However, I managed to go through a set in just 4,000 miles (with two track days and plenty of motorway miles, mind you). This could be a deal-breaker for some, but it’s the only problem with what has been a very impressive performance and I’d happily fit them again.”
